Arild Moe's research has focused primarily on Russia, with a particular emphasis on the energy sector and energy politics. He has written on the internal organization of the oil and gas industries, the potential for foreign participation, and export policies. His work also covers Russian climate policies and their relationship to energy interests. He is currently engaged in a project on the consequences of climate change for economic development in Russia's Arctic.

Through his participation in the International Northern Sea Route Programme (INSROP) and subsequent research, Moe has studied Arctic shipping with an emphasis on the political and legal conditions for navigation on the Northern Sea Route. Norwegian policies in the High North, particularly related to Svalbard, have been a constant area of interest.
